Organise layer files in Photoshop. Create frames in the animation palette. Change the duration of each frame. Set the number of times the GIF will play.
Several browser applications allow you to make GIFs from a series of still images. As an example, we'll use Ezgif. This site allows you to upload a series of images, sort them and turn them into an animated GIF. Of course, to do this we will need a set of images that work in sequence.
To do this, we will need a free Photoshop replacement. In this example we will use Pixlr. Drag and drop a video file, or enter a video URL from YouTube, Vimeo or another GIPHY page. You can also upload a series of photos to create an animated photo slideshow.
If you are starting with a series of photos, start with step 1A. If you are converting a video into a GIF using Photoshop, start with step 1B. You'll get to this menu below. It looks a bit overwhelming, but don't worry.
In the "Preset" menu, select GIF 128 Dithered. You can make slideshows from photos you've taken, create custom animations from your own creative drawings or clipart, or stitch together frames you've extracted from a video. Below the video preview, Video to GIF will ask you to select a start time and indicate the length of your GIF. Overall, if you want to create a super-simple GIF in no time, try Imgur's Video to GIF tool.
GIFs are becoming increasingly popular on Facebook, probably because they are easier to create and share on Facebook than videos. Then customise your GIF with their selection of themed stickers, instant effects and customisable caption fonts. Note that while you can create GIFs for free on this platform, you will need to become a paid subscriber to access some features. GIPHY, the company with the world's largest library of animated GIFs, now offers a free and very fun GIF Maker.
Applications such as GIPHY Capture, ScreenToGif, LICECap and GifCam allow you to make GIFs of your on-screen activity. For this example, we'll use the shape tool to create a person from a circle, rectangles and lines, saving this image to create the first frame. You are now ready to convert each of the layers you have created from your selected images into a frame of your GIF that will soon be animated. However, you can also use these same steps to create something you can share on social media, a promotional email or even via text message. Unlike other GIF creation apps, Boomerang for Instagram is a mobile app that takes a burst of photos and stitches them together into a GIF that plays back and forth without editing. The problem, however, is that to upload a GIF to Facebook you have to share it via a GIPHY link, which is far from ideal. Overall, I really like Boomerang for Instagram, especially for creating and sharing original GIFs of your product or team in action.
GIF Maker allows you to create animated GIFs from video files, YouTube links, existing GIFs and even still photos.
